The Surrealism Website
George Grie (1962-)

George Grie (Yuri Gribanovski) was born in the USSR. He had a classical art education, taking a degree in Degree in Fine Arts and Applied Design. He did not want to go down the established route of Soviet Union art and was instead drawn to painting in a surrealist style. From 1985 to 1995 he created a number of surrealist paintings. In the 1990s he lived and worked in St. Petersburg where he was an active member of the Pushkinskaya 10 art grouping.
In the late 1990 he emigrated to Canada, anglicising his last name. There he made the life-changing decision to study the latest computer digital art techniques. He became a professional Multimedia Graphic Designer and joined IBM as a new media specialist. He then became one of the first artists to work in digital surrealism. He found this medium very expressive and had great skills in image manipulation techniques.
We will look at his digital surrealism in a separate section. This page shows his early oil paintings.
